Single Crochet Increase

Description

The single crochet increase is one of the easiest increases to work into a project. Typically, you’ll work two stitches into a single stitch. In this video, crochet expert Corrina Ferguson demonstrates the single crochet increase.

An increase in crochet can be used simply to make a piece of crocheted fabric wider. It can also be used for other shaping, like in a garment or small amigurumi project. To work a single crochet increase, Corrina follows these steps:

  • Bring hook under both legs of the stitch from front to back
  • Yarn over (from back to front) and pull the yarn through the stitch (2 loops on hook)
  • Yarn over (from back to front) and pull the yarn through both loops (1 loop on hook—single crochet stitch is created)
  • Bring hook under both legs of the stitch originally worked into, from front to back
  • Yarn over (from back to front) and pull the yarn through the stitch (2 loops on hook)
  • Yarn over (from back to front) and pull the yarn through both loops (1 loop on hook—single crochet stitch is created)
  • Two single crochet stitches have been created from a single stitch—1 stitch increased.

Corrina demonstrates this increase again. She notes that once the first single crochet is completed, it’s easy to see where to work to go back into the same stitch to increase—the space has become slightly larger by the first stitch being created in it. As stitches are increased, the shape of the fabric will change and start to get wider.

I think one of my favorite things about crochet is there's just a few basic stitches that you need to learn and everything else is just ways to manipulate that to make beautiful fabric. Hi, I'm Corrina Ferguson and in this video, we're gonna learn one of the basic ways to work with the single crochet and that is the single crochet increase. So when you're working in crochet, a lot of times you're gonna wanna make your work wider or larger. And what I have here is a piece of crochet that's been worked up in all single crochets, couple of rows of it and we are going to make this a wider piece by learning how to do a single crochet increase. So a single crochet increase is really easy. Basically what you're doing is you're going to be working two single crochets into one stage. And so I'm gonna walk you through doing that. I've worked a couple to start off this row and I'm going to go into this next stitch right here and I'm going to single crochet into it twice. So we're going to take our hook insert it just like normal for the crochet stitch, you'll notice we have both of the strands, on the top of the stitch, they're on the hook. I'm gonna yarn over and pull that loop through. I'm gonna yarn over again and pull through both loops. And that gives me my first single crochet and the really easy thing about a single crochet increase is the fact that the hole has already gotten bigger. So we can see exactly where our hook needs to go for the next stitch. So we go into that same place, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through both loops. And then we have two single crochets that have been worked in one space which will increase the number of single crochets in this row. So let's look at that one more time. I'm just gonna work a couple of single crochet so we can get over a little bit. So we have our next stitch ready to go. We insert our hook and just like normal to work the stitch, we yarn over and pull through, we yarn over again and pull through both. And then like I said, it's already kind of enlarged that space. So we know exactly where to go for the second one and start our hook from front to back and pull the yarn over through, yarn over again and pull through both and that's how you do a single crochet increase. Thank you so much for joining me to learn how to work the increase in single crochet. Check out our website for more great videos.
