Single Rib Stitch

The single rib stitch is the perfect stitch pattern for a ribbed crochet hat or to add details to a sweater. There are a variety of crocheting ribbings that you can create, and the single rib stitch is a versatile one that you can incorporate into your projects. In this video, Corrina Ferguson demonstrates how to create this stitch pattern. While this stitch pattern has “single” in the name, it’s created by working double crochets, specifically front post double crochet stitches and back post double crochet stitches. The resulting fabric is squishy and slightly stretchy.

To begin, Corrina works a starting chain and then a row of regular double crochet stitches. Once the set-up row is complete, she works a row of alternating front post double crochet (fpdc) and back post double crochet (bpdc) to create the single rib stitch.

SINGLE RIB STITCH

Chain even number of stitches.

Row 1 (RS): Dc in fourth chain from hook and each chain to end. Turn.

Row 2 (WS): Ch 3 (counts as dc), (fpdc in next dc, bpdc in next dc) to ch, dc in top of ch. Turn.

Row 2 can be repeated to desired length.

Corrina notes that the resulting fabric has raised stitches on both sides, which is what creates the ribbing effect. As each subsequent row is worked, if the stitch is “popping out” towards you, work a front post double crochet into that stitch. If the stitch that is away from you, work a back post double crochet. As the work gets longer, the stitches become more defined and it’s easier to read your crochet to know which stitch should be worked.
