Description

Have you ever wanted to add a bit of extra color or some design details to a project without any extra hassle? Mary Beth Temple shows us that by using surface crochet, you can add some color after your crochet fabric is made. This is a very fun and creative process, and you will find that there are many uses for this: you can add contrasting stripes, squares, or other geometric shapes as well as organic shapes too- you can even use this technique to “write” on your projects!

Download this free pattern, and add some random stripes of different colors around the hat: Sunray Bucket Hat.

Hi, I'm Mary Beth Temple. And I want to show you how to add a pop or a line of color to your project without having to change colors while you're crocheting, it's called surface crochet. And we're going to use our crochet hook to work across the top of any row of stitches. And we're essentially crocheting a chain. So we're gonna insert our hook in the next stitch. You're an over, draw up the loop and draw it through. You can go in a straight line like I'm doing, you can go in any kind of a shape that you want to do. And when you're all finished and you get to the end, you have a line or a pop of color, but you didn't have to preplan to use a different color of yarn while you were stitching.
